When I was working on a particular scene in LotD, I recorded 3 hours of screen captures, filling it up along the way with unscripted narration. Throughout the entire process I’m describing reasons or excuses for what I’m doing, pretty much thinking aloud the whole time. Part 1 starts at the very beginning of the rough animation process and by Part 33, we’re watching the full colour character and lighting process.
Some day I’ll do a fully narrated background capture but until then, hope you get something out of this. Here’s Part 1 (below). Click HERE if you want to watch the playlist (parts 1-20) on YouTube. I’ll be uploading the remaining videos over the next few days.

this is very helpful thanks for this man!
These are extremely helpful, and very inspiring! Cheers!
Im about halfway through watching them, they are very interesting so far
Jeez man!
Will you ever stop with the brackenwood?
Lets hope not!
Keep going dude!
you know you’re hooked on animating when you find yourself watching real-time video of someone else drawing frame by frame – and you can wait for the next episode. thanks- look forward to 21-33.
I just finished watching your Dashkin FxF: Part 1-20 and found it really cool. I think that it was very generous of you to share your time and expertise with everyone. I am looking forward to the remaining episodes with anticipation!
I, like a lot of other animators, always wish we could watch an actual animation being developed first hand. You where probably there at one point as well, I am just glad that you help animators like us understand the basics so that we to can develop into professionals as well.
no problem! You’re right about me being at that point in the past. The main difference is that I had other animators to watch and learn from, right there at their desk. I think this kind of real-time video with voice over is the next best thing.
Love the videos, I had been hoping you would do something like this.
It’s also driving me crazy waiting for the next videos, any idea when your gonna post them?
Adam, this is a great series – thanks for all the recording, and also thanks for giving me concrete evidence that i am not crazy for making ’sound effects’ during the creative process. (Or at least i’m not alone.)
On top of that, and this is probably not the right place for it, but i have just discovered you, and so: You have a lovely style; the dynamism and pacing of your characters and work is really joyful. I am almost glad i’m finding you so late in the game, as getting to enjoy all your brackenwood pieces right in a row made for a fantastic time.
Anyway, looking forward to the last set of this demonstration series.
Hey Adam,
I’ve watched the first 20 videos, and I can say I’ve been waiting for something like this for a while. It’s great to see the process of creating such great quality animation! It’s great!
Are the next videos gunna be put up soon? I’m really anticipating seeing how you finish up everything. I think your backgrounds and effects are stunning, and I’m hoping you show us how you work your magic on the effects side of things with the next videos.
Also, the sounds you make while working. Haha, I do that too!
Like tigermoon said, it’s nice to know we’re not the only ones who make weird sound effects while working
I look forever to seeing the next videos, Adam, and Dashkin Pt2!
Keep up the great work, It’s safe to say you’ve got a huge fan!

There is no second opinion. The tutorial is awesome.
It gives a right idea of how much time the process is consuming.
Really inspiring.
Waiting for the remaining 13nt
By the way i wanted to ask you something, if it’s not a problem
I’m curious what shortcuts are you using on your tablet, when you work in flash?
And do you know any shortcuts for fast changing of the brush mode (paint normal, paint fills…)
Hello sir.
let me introduce myself,
i’m a young boy, who likes drawing very much.
you’re artworks are beginning to inspire me.
is it possible you answer a few questions about flash animation?
ps: do you also accept aprentices?
i also have a newgrounds account name: Speedy912
Hey Speedy, unfortunately I can’t dedicate the time an apprentice deserves. That was pretty much my whole reason for making the BCA chapters.. I get frequent requests for personal tuition, but because I’m usually busy on freelance contracts and Brackenwood, I don’t have the time to teach. Check em out here if you haven’t already. The first two are free.
ah! i’ve taken so long to comment on this, but i’ve watched all of them. i think a lot of people have learned just by looking at what you do–though, hahaha, crayons are very unforgiving when drawing on paper.
neat stuff
